In January 2013, I interviewed a young woman named Lauren Galley, who in high school started a Girls Above Society. Her organization began as a way to combat bullying and to empower teenage girls to feel better about themselves. Today, her organization has grown like wildfire. Her website includes regular features like Girl Talk, a series of presentations about self-image, bullying, and empowerment. She has given a TED talk and now has her own radio show on Blog Talk Radio.

Debra Oakland lost an infant daughter, a 21-year-old son, and two other family members in the same year. Jelani Lateef is a rapper that lost his wife to cancer two months after the birth of his daughter, who almost died herself in childbirth. But Jelani made an unusual choice as a result. He decided to be a positive role model as a single black father and use his art to promote positive attitudes and positive psychology, even for those who have suffered greatly like he himself has.
Jelani was kind enough to join Walt as his guest this week. Will he convince Walt, who has never liked rap music, to finally become a rap fan as a result of this conversation? Listen to find out!

This week on LOA Today, Uohna tells us about a Buddhist monk who has mastered the art of being happy every conscious moment of every day of his life. He even volunteered for 3 hours inside an MRI unit to help a Western medical researcher learn more about how his brain works. Most people start to freak out in an MRI machine after a half hour. Three hours later, he emerged happy and content. Is he crazy, or is he someone we need to learn to emulate?

Thoughtcatalog.com says, “Happiness is fleeting. It’s that line on the heart monitor that ascends to the highest peak but falls just as easily, if not sooner. It’s that spike in your blood sugar level after an unlawful amount of chocolate. It’s the deluded caffeine high after one too many cups of black coffee. It’s transitory and it’s short-lived.”
Is it true? No, not necessarily. Actually, happiness is the most normal, healthy state a human being can live in, and it can be a permanent experience. This week on LOA Today, we look at scientific studies being done today that move us closer to the conclusion that happiness can and should be our normal experience, as well as telling us what it will take for us to get there.

Did you know that one of the best ways to gain better health is to forgive? That's right, and it has nothing to do with the person you're forgiving. The act of true forgiveness actually has some amazing physiological benefits to the person doing the forgiving.
This week on LOA Today, we explore the incredible, physical impact of forgiveness on the human brain of the forgiver.
